Reclaiming the A-Word: A Trilogy

The word apostate is one of the most feared, misunderstood, and misused labels in Jehovah’s Witness culture. In this three-part series, I explore how that label is used to silence, vilify, and divide — and why it’s time to strip it of its power. From so-called “lies,” to the psychology of fear, to the hope of unity beyond belief systems — here’s a journey through the A-word.

Well… it seems I’m an apostate. Or at least that’s what some people have decided.
So let’s talk about it.

The word carries a lot of weight — fear, stigma, assumptions — but very little real understanding. That’s why I’ve decided to dig into it across three short reflections: what people say we lie about, why the label itself is so powerful, and whether it’s really necessary to turn differences into enemies.

Here’s the trilogy:

Part 1: Apostate Lies Exposed
What are the actual “lies” apostates are accused of telling? Let’s look at a few examples — and the Watchtower’s own words.

Part 2: The A-Word: Why ‘Apostate’ Is So Scary
What gives the label so much power? Why is it so terrifying, even to those who haven't left? A reflection on fear, control, and identity.

Part 3: Unity Without an Enemy
Leaving doesn’t mean hating. Apostates aren’t enemies. A call for love, even across belief divides.
